Albert Serra directs this historical drama focusing on the demise of the titular French king (Jean-Pierre Léaud) in 1715. In his final days, the long-reigning and popular monarch is consigned to his deathbed as his health begins to deteriorate. As the best medical minds and his close physicians ponder how to cure his ails, the king's body is made to suffer further in the desperate attempts to save his life. However, when it is clear their attempts will fail and his death appears inevitable, King Louis XIV is read his last rights before his body is again scrutinised in death.
